3 Great Indoor House Plants for Improving Air Quality

Do you like to have plants in your home because of their beauty? Or do you actually make the number one priority the fact that they can improve and purify the air in your house? There are many varieties of indoor plants that do both.

Do you suffer from irritation to your eyes or headaches or dizziness? Do you think you should be able to breathe easier? The plants can remove airborne pollutants that cause different health problems. You can maximize the air-cleaning benefits by putting a plant every 100 square feet in your rooms.

Following are just a few examples of low-maintenance house plants that brighten and freshen your decor with enchanting bits of color.

Peace Lily

This plant topped NASA’s list for removing all three of most common volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene, as well as xylene and toluene.
Peace lilies are renowned for needing easy care. They are hardy and just need watering once a week and placement in a dark corner to survive and produce blooms and will even let you know when they are thirsty by presenting a telltale droop! However, do keep in mind that the plant is mildly toxic, so be sure to wash your hands after handling it, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

Chrysanthemum

These pretty favorites remove those harmful VOCs. Benzene is found in paint, detergents, glue, inks, and plastics while trichloroethylene might come home with dry cleaning.

The flowers of a mum can match any decor because they come in so many different colors. Buds are encouraged to open when the plant has a spot near an open window with direct bright sunlight. Check the water levels every other day to make sure the soil stays moist. When you want the plant indoors, choose a floral mum rather than a garden variety that does better when planted outdoors.

Gerbera Daisy

These beautiful blooms make wonderful centerpieces with cut blooms that can last as long as two weeks. They also help cleanse the air of those VOCs. They need lots of sunlight, so make sure they get at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. This daisy actually flourishes in temperatures that are regularly above 75 degrees. Do not overwater them, but do keep the soil moist and well-drained with drainage holes in the pots.
