How to Create an Inviting Outside Space

How to Create an Inviting Outside Space

With summer fast approaching, there are few things more enjoyable than spending a warm evening outside with family and friends. Your individual tastes may vary and depend on your location, but there are some tried and true tips for anyone to create a truly ambient and lovely outdoor space.

Multi-level decks are wonderful for designating an area to grill and dine and an area to socialize. Decks require care to pressure-wash, replace old boards, and may need staining each year. Over time, wooden decks will need to be replaced.

Patios can be made of concrete or stone and generally last longer. They are easy to make inviting, however, with a whimsical gazebo (either purchased or built from wood), and a pergola is a wooden large trellis with vines that cover it. Bringing plants to the deck, even lots of ferns, can add an ethereal feel. Pick up unique containers at flea markets and plant roots and bulbs that bloom in the summer that can be moved indoors in the winter.

Weatherproof furniture and cushions can be expensive but are a good investment for outdoor entertaining. Hammocks, futons, couches, chaise lounges, and weather-proof rugs make a beautiful outdoor living space. You can strategically add lights or torches around this area, as well as decorative garden flags and garden decor.

An outdoor kitchen – which can be as simple as a grill and an outdoor countertop, will contribute to the likelihood of grilling and eating outside.

Provide for privacy with enclosures such as fences, lattice, trees, vines, and adjustable umbrellas, retractable awnings, which also provide shade during those intense summer days.

If you have a pool or hot tub, make sure to keep it fenced in for safety, and check chemical levels every couple days. Make inexpensive stone walkways between your pool and deck area if needed for easy walking. You can line this area with shrubbery and lights for a more intimate feel after sundown.

A fire pit can be a lovely addition to any yard – and can be inexpensively built with bricks and rocks. Make sure that no flammable material is near and be sure a water hose is nearby if needed and fire starts to get out of control. It is a good idea not to use a firepit during excessively dry and windy times. Outdoor furniture or floor cushions around the area provide an inviting place to sit.
