The Easiest Plants for Curbside Appeal

The Easiest Plants for Curbside Appeal

There are few things that make a home more inviting than the appearance of the yard that surrounds it. While a well-maintained lawn looks like it is time consuming, there are ways to make it less so. Healthy grass is one way to give your home instant charisma, but a few well-placed plants can add major curbside appeal with minimal work. While you have to consider things like your climate, you may also want to think about the presence of wildlife or domestic animals and how they may affect vegetation that you plant around your home. Always research the safety of plants that any of your pets may come in contact with.

Other things to consider are the shade or lack thereof around your home. While a shaded yard can be an asset to selling a home, it can also make it difficult to seed grass. One plant that easily grows in most climates and loves shade is the Hosta. It is a leafy plant that can present in shades of cream, red, green, or even blue. These medium-to-large leafed plants are a delight because they do well in the shade and require minimal care but add instant charisma to a yard.

Deutzias are wonderful shrubs that produce year-round color and blossom into small white clusters of flowers in the spring. They do well in sun to part shade and require little maintenance.

Although many roses are high maintenance, don’t completely forego them! Knockout roses are very low maintenance and grow very large from spring to frost, adding bright pops of reds, pinks or yellows and don’t even require pruning in order to thrive. These are a major eye catcher of people looking to buy homes in the spring and while they are dormant in the winter, they continue to bloom each year.

Boxwoods are evergreen plants that give instant structure to a yard, adding hedging to a porch or mailbox area, and they come in many sizes, which make them perfect for beds and borders as well. They require little care and will provide greenery all winter long.

Don’t forget that a few potted plants placed on your porch can give instant character to a bare yard. Large ferns are inexpensive and can either hang from the porch or sit in containers outside. They require little care and can survive until first frost, when they can be brought indoors for the winter.

Small but festive changes can make your home an eye-catcher and are bound to add curb appeal.
