7 Tricks to Keep Your House Clean for Showings
Selling your home is stressful – and it’s even more stressful when your Realtor® calls you and says, “Hey, can you be out in 15 minutes? I have a buyer who wants to see the house.”
You’ll run through your home, whisking away clutter and wishing you had time to run the vacuum.
It happens to all of us.
But there’s great news: You can use these seven tricks to keep your house clean for showings.
7 Tricks to Keep Your House Clean for Showings
- Make your bed
- Take care of dishes in the morning
- Wipe down sinks as you go
- Don’t leave things on the counter
- Keep cleaning supplies everywhere
- Invest in a Swiffer
- Get yourself a movable laundry basket
#1. Make Your Bed
Make your bed first thing in the morning. (And make everyone else make theirs, too.)
#2. Stay on Top of the Dishes
Empty the dishwasher as soon as you start brewing your coffee.
#3. Wipe Down Sinks and Faucets Every Time You Use Them
Wipe down sinks and faucets as you go – so when you enter a bathroom, make it a point to check the sink and see if it needs to be cleaned. If it does, take care of it before you leave.
#4. Don’t Leave Things on the Counter
Don’t leave paperwork, mail, homework or anything else on the counter. If you need to, set up a file folder where everything goes – and when you leave the house for a showing, take the file folder with you.
#5. Keep Cleaning Supplies Everywhere
Keep cleaning supplies in satellite locations around the house. Make sure each lavatory has toilet bowl cleaner and scrub brushes. Keep multiple dusters in closets throughout the house. Store spray cleaner in bathroom cabinets. That way, they’ll be easier to access on the fly – and you’ll be more likely to use them when it’s time to clean individual rooms.
#6. Invest in a Swiffer
Invest in a Swiffer. Using a Swiffer with replaceable mopping cloths can save you tons of time filling up the sink, cleaning out the mop and starting over. While it’s not the most eco-friendly solution, it can help you get through the time that your house is on the market. You can go back to mopping in your new house.
#7. Get Yourself a Movable Laundry Basket
Keep an empty laundry basket near your front door. When you get the call that someone’s coming to see your home, whisk everything that you don’t have time to put away into it. Take the basket with you when you leave, and when you get back home, put away everything inside it.
