The Five Worst Kinds of Neighbors

The Five Worst Kinds of Neighbors

Of course, everyone wants to have good neighbors. It’s nice to have a social circle who can help you out in a pinch, borrow a tool from, chat with, and share a glass of lemonade now and then. Most people claim to want those kind of neighbor relationships, yet more and more people say that they don’t even know their neighbor’s name. That’s okay, too – not everyone wants to be friends with their neighbors. We are pretty sure, however, that nobody wants to be known as the worst neighbors. Let’s take a look at who they are.

The Five Worst Kinds of Neighbors

  • The Tattletale
  • The Snoop
  • The Rockstar/Party Animal
  • The Fighters
  • The Thieves

Pretty obvious, but nobody likes a tattletale. However, it seems every community has one. Yes, we know that no more than five cars can be parked in the driveway per the HOA, but it is Super Bowl Sunday! Geez. Don’t be that neighbor. On the other hand, if something is really wrong, such as an animal is outside freezing for days, etc. – of course you should report that. But minor infractions? Leave it alone. You think nobody will know who is snitching, but people will find out. What drives you to do that anyway?

Most people are a little bit nosy. It’s human nature to wonder about the lives of others, but it’s not okay to pepper someone with personal questions, snoop in their mailbox, watch every car that comes and goes from their home (and then tell everyone else about it). This will win you no friends. Be friendly, but mind your own business. If people tell you things about their lives, don’t tell others.

Oh, The Rockstar. We all were likely this person at age 22 or so, but some of us are still this person at 42. That’s fine, but most of your neighbors are now working in corporate America and have a commuter train to catch at 5 am. Your amp making their ears bleed at 4 am doesn’t impress them, it infuriates them. All the worse if your partying lifestyle includes a lot of drinking, drugs, etc…not a good look for anybody.

The Fighters are a little entertaining, we admit. Listening to them insult every single member of the other’s family, bring up a Christmas fail twelve years ago, and make up names to scream at each other can be rather interesting. However, that interest ends at about 8 pm, which is when The Fighters like to crank it up. Even worse, the making up part, which can also go on for hours. Don’t be that couple.

Another pretty obvious one, but some people didn’t get the memo that private property isn’t community property. It’s not okay to “borrow” someone’s Wi-Fi without permission (lock it down!), go get their paper and read it before they do (cringe) or hop the fence uninvited and take a dip in their pool when they aren’t home.

Avoid these habits and you’re on your way to being a good neighbor, or at least not a bad one.
