3 Outdoor Hobbies It’s Never Too Late To Try

Most people pick up hobbies early in life, but there’s nothing saying that is set in stone – in fact, as we get older, our children become independent, our careers may stabilize a bit, and we might find ourselves a bit more interested in physical, emotional and spiritual ventures and health. Fortunately, there are quite a few outdoor hobbies that are low or no-cost, may help you get more exercise, soak up some sunshine, and perhaps meet new friends!

3 Outdoor Hobbies It’s Never Too Late To Try

  • hiking
  • kayaking
  • bicycling

When people thinking of hiking, many think of very strenuous hiking through dangerous mountains and for extended time frames. That’s certainly one type of hiking, but many people enjoy more beginner-to-intermediate type hiking, through foothills or shorter trails, which may only be a few miles long. This is a great hobby because with a well-established trail that is common to National parks across the country, a good pair of walking shoes, and a backpack, nearly anybody can accomplish it. It’s not a race, so you can go as slowly as you need to if you’re not as physically fit as you’d like to be. If some inclines are difficult, take your time and rest. Take your camera, lots of water, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. Many hikes can be accomplished in a few hours, so it doesn’t need to consume your weekend. Some people even hike after work to relax! Hiking is a sport that can be done year round, in all but the most extreme weather, so you are able to enjoy the foliage of autumn and first snowflakes of winter.

Kayaking is something that also intimidates many, because they picture kayakers embattled on treacherous rapids in vast rivers, but that is only one type of kayaking. With proper equipment and realistic goals, anyone can kayak! The key is to research the bodies of water close to you and take your first river trips with an experienced person or a guide. Some people choose to only kayak in lakes, which allows for peace, fish and bird watching, and an opportunity to get used to the mechanics of operating the kayak with minimal risk.

We all rode bicycles when we were children, but many stopped as we got older and began driving cars. Of course, in urban areas, many people never stopped. Bicycling is great exercise that is easier on the knees and other joints that running, and it is fairly safe with appropriate protective gear (helmet, etc.) Many cities and suburban areas have entire bike trails created for just this reason – and some people start to use it as an alternative means of transportation if they only live a few miles from work!

There are many other outdoor activities you can pursue at any age, but these are a few that you can start with minimal skill an no experience, just the desire to get out in nature. The wild is calling – what’s stopping you?
